Town of Firestone: Blizzard by the Numbers

During March 13-15, 2021, Firestone Public Works staff worked day and night to plow the 95 miles of roadways, 28 miles of trails, 5.5 acres of park, and facility parking lots.  The Town of Firestone would like to thank the employees who worked tirelessly during this storm.  Additionally, Firestone residents deserve a big thank you.  Many of you not only shoveled your property, but you helped neighbors and friends dig out.  We know the residential street snow removal process caused many to have to re-shovel areas.  With the amount of snow received in Firestone, the residential street plowing was not an easy task. We appreciate your understanding of the importance of creating a passable lane in all neighborhoods.

THE NUMBERS:

During this unprecedented snow event, the streets snow removal crews worked to plow designated snow routes while working in blizzard conditions that produced limited visibility and 4 to 6 feet snowdrifts on roads running east to west. For 5 days, this crew worked rotating 12-hour shifts, consisting of 6 drivers and one fleet mechanic totaling 716 staff hours.  Trucks traveled 2,624 miles while plowing and staff logged 326 hours on heavy equipment. 
 
The parks, trails, and facility crews worked to remove snow from trails and facilities continuously during the storm to avoid snow accumulation of 2 feet that would have proven difficult to remove without the assistance of heavy equipment that was dedicated to roadways.  These crews estimate traveling 280 miles while plowing trails and logged 134 equipment hours, and cleared snow from 5.5 acres of park and facilities parking lots.  At times they also assisted with the clearing of entryway to neighborhood streets. The parks, trails, and facilities crew consists of 10 people who worked rotating shifts totaling 386 staff hours.
