CVPRD Update

Carbon Valley Parks & Recreation District Presentation

During Wednesday night's meeting, the Executive Director of Carbon Valley Parks and Recreation District (CVPRD), Dean Rummel, presented the Board with an update on their recent feasibility study and expansion plans.  In 2019, the CVPRD launched a feasibility study and identified the following priorities based on community feedback: outdoor aquatic facility, 2nd recreation center, senior activity space, and outdoor courts. Due to COVID-19, the plans were paused in 2020.  In 2021, CVPRD conducted another survey to see if the demand for expanded services and facilities was still there.  They received very favorable survey results and believe that access to sports, fitness and recreation facilities is important to the community now more than ever.

As of now, the proposed expansion plans include the following:

  • A Second Rec Center

    • Proposed location at Firestone's Central Park
    • Full-service, encompassing over 30,000 square feet
  • A New Outdoor Water Park

    • Planned for Firestone's Central Park adjacent to the proposed second rec center

    • Large water park with several water slides, a splash pad, kiddie pool, leisure pool, and lap pool

  • New Tennis and Pickleball Courts

    • Proposed location adjacent to the outdoor water park and rec center, connected by sidewalks

  • New Senior Center Fitness Room

    • Expansion onto the south side of the current senior center

    • 1,000 square feet of dedicated fitness space

CVPRD shared that the total cost of this project is estimated at just over $30 million, the majority of which is in capital construction costs. Over the summer, the CVPRD Board of Directors will consider its options to finance this proposed expansion plan by possibly asking the voters for a 2.7 mill increase.   CVPRD paid off its previous debt in 2018, which means the mill levy went down by 2.785 mills at that time.

CVPRD will be at many upcoming events in Firestone this summer. The Firestone Board of Trustees encourages the public to ask questions and get informed about this project.

Website Redesign Project Update

The Board of Trustees received an update on Wednesday night on the status of a website redesign project that the Town of Firestone has recently started.  Firestone staff members are in the first stages of working with CivicPlus to redesign and update the current website and are soliciting feedback from the public.  If you have comments, concerns, frustrations, or ideas to share about the website, please email communications@firestoneco.gov.

Don't Forget!
