Board of Trustees Special Meeting Follow-Up
The Board of Trustees met in a Special Meeting on Wednesday, June 30, to hear a report from Mr. Alan Youngs, the third-party law enforcement expert appointed by the Board of Trustees. Mr. Youngs examined the findings, recommendations, and policies of the Town’s Safety Services Director and other law enforcement professionals who have been reviewing the procedures and practices of the Firestone Police Department. Listen to the entire meeting recording here.
While the final report from Mr. Youngs has not yet been submitted, there is little doubt that the findings presented are a clear call to action. With the support of the Safety Services Director and Police Command Staff, important changes have already begun.
The implementation of Lexipol has been instrumental in helping the Police Department modernize and adapt as it updates many policies and procedures.
Rigorous training and testing protocols for supervisory staff will help ensure that Police Department leadership represents the best and brightest within our Department.
Improvements within the evidence and property management system will help assure that the Department is in the best position to secure justice for victims.
Software and technology improvements will keep the Police Department compliant with Colorado Senate Bill 217 requirements.
And finally, the preparation and implementation of a Police Department Strategic Plan will serve as a blueprint for providing first quality public safety services for our growing Firestone community.
Still, there is work to be done. Nationwide we’ve seen a shift in public safety that requires more transparency and accountability. The Board of Trustees, Town Manager, and Police Department staff are committed to working together to make sure the Firestone Police Department sets the standard for both.
Firestone is moving forward. Updating and modernizing our approach to providing public safety services is critical to the progress we’re making. We will continue to share updates on the progress we’re making.
