When do I need to get a permit?
During the month of May, the Town of Firestone will be celebrating Building Safety Month. During this campaign, we will focus on sharing tips and resources for the entire community to ensure we have safe and sustainable structures where we live, work and play here in Firestone.
The Town of Firestone encourages all residents to check with our Building Division before beginning home improvement projects. The Town of Firestone requires permits for home improvement projects, including electrical, mechanical, structural or plumbing work. As a result of getting a permit, an inspector will check the work to provide a measure of safety to protect your life and property.
Who gets a permit?
Most contractors know the building code requirements and abide by them. Many times the contractor will obtain the building permit for the property owner. Unfortunately, not all contractors comply with applicable code requirements. Remember, regardless of who receives the permit, the property owner is ultimately responsible for obtaining a building permit and ensuring the contractor requests the necessary inspections and approvals.
Common Projects that Require Permits:
- Re-roofing does, but shingle repair of one square (100 square feet in area) are exempt from a permit and inspections
- Electrical and plumbing changes
- Replacing windows
- Remodeling kitchens or bathrooms
- Installing a pool, spa or hot tub
- Building an addition
- Installing appliances and replacements such as furnaces, boilers, water heaters, fireplaces and space heaters
- Building a fence
